MOBILITY IN LATVIA 08.04. – 12.04. 2019
During the mobility in Latvia the participants were engaged on a more personal level in realizing and analyzing the effects of unmindful consumption and production. Having started with the formulation of the definition of sustainability through mutual discussions as well as having calculated their individual Ecological Footprint with focus aimed to raise awareness and understanding of the impact of consumption on the environment and on people in order to make a set of simple actions and contribute to the Goal on a daily basis implementing their own ideas and also using the Lazy Person’ Guide to saving the world. Listening to the presentations of the guest speakers – local enterpreneurs who shared real and inspiring experience of sustainability in their production, as well as visiting local enterprises gave good examples of responsible and mindful usage of resources.
Also the participants were introduced the concept of circular or restorative economy opposed to linear economy in order to see the bigger picture and to understand that such familiar conclusions as “reduce, reuse, recycle” can have negative effects in such areas as employment, standards of living and the economy. Activities and discussions were motivating factor to search for solution on how to contribute to reasonable and responsible consumption that finalized as group presentations on their contribution to the goal making change for themselves and sharing it with others in order to significantly cut waste generation.
Madona School Student Council organized discussion clubs or meetings where each mobility participants shared their experience, feedback and outcome focusing on specific Global Goal thus informing and raising interest in the Nordplus project itself, as well as motivating other young people to believe that many things can be improved if they take everyday actions.
The students who participated in mobilities informed their classmates and other school students and teachers during meetings, they wrote articles for Madona local newspaper “Stars” and also for the school homepage.
The project ”Global Goals Enquiry” is a continuation of the a Nordplus Junior funded cooperation started in the school year 2017/18 between five of the participating schools. In the current proposal a sixth partner school is included. The Global Goals Enquiry project will build on the framework developed in the preceding project “Global Learning Power”. The aim of the project is to educate students at secondary level to be globally engaged citizens and to prepare them for the 21st century. This isdone through international exchange over the course of two years including 6 mobilities and involving approximately 180 persons in total. At the mobilities the participants will be working with the Global Goals for Sustainable Development (www.globalgoals.org). In continuation of the previous project the partners want provide an opportunity for our students to use and evolve their 21st century skills in order to prepare them for a rapidly changing society and give them experience with deep learning. The Global Goals Enquiry Workshop held during the mobilities is inspired by the Learning Power Model “Crick Learning for Resilient Agency” (CLARA) (www.clara.learningemergence.com). During the workshop the students will practice their Learning Power within dimensions such as curiosity, creativity, collaboration and mindful agency and they will go through a five stages enquiry process exploring the Global Goals.
The schools have found the cooperation very fruitful in terms of new inspiration and it has given a feeling of unity across the Nordic and Baltic regions. This is aligned with the overall objective of Nordplus to create a Nordic-Baltic educational area. During the previous mobilities the project has developed from an idea for the structure and content of the mobility to a well-tested and successful framework that works across our different educational cultures. With the new project the aim is to refine this framework and with the framework is in place it will be possible to heighten the academic level of content. The Project will be used as inspiration for the participating schools as well other interested schools on how the Global Goals can be used as content for teaching. This way the project also lives up to the Nordplus objective of development of quality and innovation in the educational systems for lifelong learning in the participating Nordplus countries through cooperation in education and training, as well as cooperation with the labour market on development projects, exchange programmes and networking. Visits to and workshop with the surrounding community (organisations and companies) are important parts of the mobilities. This will give inspiration on how students and teachers can contribute to the Global Goals and it will highlight that all sectors will have to work together to make the world a better place through contributing to the success of the Goals. By continuing the partnership and building on the experience so far, an opportunity opens up for even more systematic exchange of experiences and good practice witch is stated as one of the objective of the Nordplus Programme.
Besides the focus on the Global Goals an important part of the mobilities is cultural understanding. This understanding will be worked with through activities such as cooking local food together, visiting important historical sights and by the students making presentations about their country and local area.
The main target group for the activities are students from the participating schools. During the two years each school will be responsible for hosting a mobility with five students participating from the other partner schools (a total of 25 visiting students). At the hosting school a minimum of five students will also take part in the mobility as well as contribute to organizing the activities. The overall theme is the Global Goals but each school will choose one particular goal which will be in focus during the mobility.
This way the hosting school can choose a topic where they have particular competencies or interesting local partners for workshops and/or who can give presentations. This way the host can showcase how they can link the topic to their everyday teachings and they can develop their collaboration with localbusinesses’ and organizations.
